Café Orgánico Marcala (COMSA) is located in Marcala, La Paz, in western Honduras. This is one of the poorest areas in the country. People are highly dependent on co ee and agriculture. COMSA was founded in 2000 by 45 community-minded farmers. At the time, farmers were su ering rock bottom co ee prices which made it unpro table to harvest co ee. Most farmers in the area were forced to abandon their farms and many migrated to cities in the US in search of work. Since that time COMSA’s farmers have united their forces in order to access specialty markets and rebuild their livelihoods. They quickly learnt that organic farming is more than a conversion process; they began developing an organic and sustainable culture which balances the needs of business, society and environment. Membership has since grown, a quarter of members are women. Many also grow fruit and vegeta- bles, and keep cattle, pigs, poultry and sh. COMSA’s organic production policy improves co ee quality by reviving depleted soil fertility and ending use of the harmful chemicals that caused it. COMSA pays good prices for members’ co ee, and this has bene tted the broader community because other traders have been forced to o er higher prices to local farmers as well. The cooperative carries out all the processing; from pulping the ripe fruit, to converting it to green co ee and storing it for export.
